Louis Gottschalk, a virtuoso pianist born in New Orleans, composed Union in 1862 as a tribute to his favorite Union general, George B. McClellan. It s a rousing concoction of American patriotic tunes, weaving together Yankee Doodle, Hail, Columbia and The Star-Spangled Banner (which wasn t yet the official national anthem of the United States.) A great historical addition to any 4th of July concert!
