Description

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 – 1764) was one of the most important French composers of the 18th century. His five suites for for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord, Pièces de clavecin en concerts, were groundbreaking works in the development of chamber music. Graceful and coquettish, La Cupis, from the fifth suite, celebrates Marie-Anne Cupis, known as La Camargo (1710-1770), who was a famous dancer at the Académie royale de la musique and took part in the premiere of Rameau s 1733 opera-ballet Hippolyte et Aricie.
